New Smiles, New Beginnings Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the oral health and overall wellbeing of underserved communities.

Our mission is to provide the underrepresented and overlooked population with access to quality preventative oral health care, with our focus on the betterment of the whole person.

Our belief is that empowering individuals with the knowledge and resources to maintain optimal oral health is a key factor in promoting overall health and wellbeing. We strive to provide high-quality oral health care services and education to those in need.

In addition to providing access to quality care, we also provide resources and support to individuals and families in need.

Our aim is to reduce barriers to oral health care and improve the quality of life of those in our community. We are committed to providing a safe and positive environment where all individuals can access the resources and support they need to achieve their oral health goals.

WHAT WE DO

Dental

Cleanings

These cleanings contribute to fresh breath, a brighter smile, and an overall improvement in oral hygiene. Additionally, preventive dental cleanings play a crucial role in the early detection of potential oral issues, allowing for timely intervention and minimizing the risk of more serious dental problems. Regular cleanings and plaque removal to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

Oral Health Education

Oral health education empowers individuals with the knowledge and skills to maintain proper oral hygiene practices, reducing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues. This education promotes a lifelong commitment to oral health, fostering habits such as regular brushing, flossing, and a balanced diet. Ultimately, informed individuals are better equipped to make proactive decisions about their oral care, leading to improved overall well-being and a lasting, confident smile.

Community Outreach

Encouraging community engagement through outreach events. We believe that supporting the community is key. Our team strives to organize outreach events that will connect patients to important resources, including obtaining dental insurance, and a dental home, medical providers, and substance abuse resources. Our goal is to address the whole person, promoting overall wellness.

Oral Health Disparities

According to the Michigan State Oral Health Plan (SOHP), 55% of Michiganders do not have dental insurance, that number increases with minorities, with black adults being 22% less likely than white adults to have had a routine visit in the last year. Preventative measures such as community water fluoridation and oral health programs are in place to improve oral health but there are still disparities in Michigan. Preventative oral health care, including regular dental visits, daily oral hygiene, and community needs assessments are measures that can decrease these disparities but some barriers still exist. These barriers to OHC are beginning to be addressed by Direct Access Models whose sole purpose is to increase the availability of OHC to disadvantaged populations. Nonprofit dental programs are helping bridge the gap to OHC.

Meet the team

Jazmyn Ragland BSDH, RDH, RDA

Meet Jazmyn, a Jackson resident with a decade of dental experience. Her interest in public health was sparked while working as a dental assistant at the Center for Family Health. She continued her education at Washtenaw Community College, Jackson College, and the University of Michigan, where she gained extensive knowledge in dental hygiene and public health. She is a mother and enjoys spending time with her two sons.
